The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral (CGRS D) program is a federal program of scholarships awarded through national competitions by the granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The program aims to promote continued excellence in Canadian research by rewarding and retaining high-calibre doctoral students at Canadian institutions. By providing support for a high-quality research training experience to awardees, the CGRS D program strives to foster impacts within and beyond the research environment.

An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completion of the program. AVÎÞÂë’s PsyD program is an eligible program.

At Concordia, you must be registered in the PsyD program. In addition, you must meet the following general eligibility requirements:

  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), as of the application deadline.  You must be enrolled, or have applied for, or are intending to apply for an eligible doctoral program.
  • be a foreign citizen.  A limited number of Tri-agency awards (up to 15% of awards) will be available to international applicants but you must be enrolled in your doctoral program of study at an eligible Canadian institution by the institutional application deadline.
  • have completed no more than 36 months of full-time equivalent study in your doctoral program by December 31 of the calendar year of application.
  • submit a maximum of one scholarship (master’s or doctoral) or postdoctoral research award application per year to either CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC. You can apply a maximum of three times to the CGRS D.
  • not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC.
  • you cannot hold a tenure-track appointment or be on leave from such an appointment concurrently with a CGRS D award.

Number of months: Eligibility for CGRS D is based on the number of months of full-time study, including summer months, you completed by December 31 of the calendar year of your application toward the degree for which you are requesting funding. Two terms of part-time study count as one term of full-time study.

Note: You may be eligible to apply to the CGRS M program for your first year of doctoral funding. Applying for a CGRS M, if you are eligible, will maximize your potential period of funding. If you are going directly from an undergraduate degree to the PsyD program (i.e. you do not hold a Master’s degree), you can apply for a CGRS M in your first year of studies, and a CGRS D in your second year. You are responsible for choosing the type of award for which you apply.

Subject Eligibility: AVÎÞÂë should be aware that research related to Psychology can fall to more than one agency.  AVÎÞÂë should review & , prior to submitting their application.

Priority Research Areas: In Budget 2024, funding was provided to support an increase in the number of awards, a portion of which will be dedicated to supporting priority research areas. The agencies will make additional award offers for select meritorious applications that align with one or more of the following priority research areas:

  • Advanced digital technologies (including AI, quantum, and cybersecurity)
  • Health, including biotechnology
  • Clean technology and resource value chains
  • Environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic
  • Food and water security
  • Democratic and community resilience
  • Manufacturing and advanced materials
  • Defence and dual-use technologies

SSHRC Application Procedures

AVÎÞÂë must apply either through a Canadian institution that has a quota for your selected agency or directly to the appropriate agency depending on your registration status in the calendar year of application.  Failure to submit an application through the correct channel will result in your application being rejected.  Please refer to the flowchart Where Should I Submit My Application?  or contact finaid@concordia.ab.ca.

AVÎÞÂë has a SSHRC and NSERC quotas, therefore, Concordia PsyD students applying for a SSHRC CGRS D must submit their application through the by Concordia’s internal deadline of October 12th.  For subject matter eligibility that falls under NSERC, applications must be submitted through the by October 12th.

Indigenous Applicants: Institutions may recommend applications from self-identified Indigenous applicants to the doctoral awards competition beyond their application quota. Indigenous applicants must agree to their personal information being used for this purpose by making the appropriate selection in the application form. Note: A checkbox in the application form to identify a proposed program of study as Indigenous research, such that the will apply (CIHR and SSHRC only).

Black Student Researchers: The Government of Canada has provided additional funds to increase direct support for Black student researchers. CGRS D applicants who self-identify as Black and provide consent to be considered for funds designated for specific groups may be selected to receive this funding. Each agency has up to 10 additional CGRS D awards reserved for Black student researchers.

Transcript Guidelines

AVÎÞÂë requires official, up to date transcripts for all post-secondary studies as part of the application package.  For students including foreign transcripts, if the transcripts are not presented in one of Canada’s two official languages (English or French), a certified translation must be provided, in addition to the transcripts in the original language.  Include one copy of marking key/legend (usually on the back of the transcript) for each institution.  If you have questions, please contact the Financial Aid and Awards Office.

AVÎÞÂë will convene a selection committee for review and ranking.

December 6th: Concordia submits recommended applications to SSHRC/NSERC

April: The agencies will publish the names (and other basic award information) of scholarship recipients on their respective websites.

Selection Process

Eligible applications will first be reviewed at the institutional level (AVÎÞÂë). Recommended applications will then be forwarded to SSHRC or NSERC (according to our quota) for the national competition by December 6th

The evaluation of CGRS D applications is based on the following criteria:

  • 50% for research ability or potential
  • 50% relevant experiences and achievements obtained within and beyond academia
